Boards and investors demand and reward it, and teams are comforted by it. But, hidden from everyone, there is a quiet, nervous \u201csecret\u201d: <\/span><b>Most are just <\/b><b><i>playing <\/i><\/b><b>the part.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I call this <\/span><b>Performative AI Readiness: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the gap between the nice, polished &#8220;AI-First&#8221; slide deck and the reality of a leader who is secretly terrified they\u2019re falling behind. However, there is a positive psychology twist to all of this &#8211; <\/span><b>this &#8220;pretending&#8221; is actually a <\/b><b><i>healthy signal<\/i><\/b><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It means your organization has the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ambition<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to change. It just has to work in building the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychological safety<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to do it.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ef65ab elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9ef65ab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The \"Pretender\" as a Prototype<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-395f54d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"395f54d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my day-to-day, I see &#8220;performative&#8221; behavior not necessarily as a lie but more as a <\/span><b>behavioral prototype.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When standards change from one day to the next, people &#8220;act the part&#8221; of the future before they live it.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main problem is when &#8220;acting&#8221; becomes a permanent behavior, which hinders innovation. To turn this performance into progress, three stages of the AI Maturity Shift need to be recognized:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Performative:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;We have to look like we know what we&#8217;re doing to stay relevant.&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Permissive:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;It\u2019s okay that we don&#8217;t know everything; let\u2019s find out.&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Productive:<\/b><span> &#8220;We are learning and iterating in real-time.&#8221;<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-29b8969 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"29b8969\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-811b5bf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"811b5bf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why Being \"Unready\" is Your Greatest Asset<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8643f2e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8643f2e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The companies that will actually win the \u201cAI race\u201d (whatever that truly means) are the ones brave enough to admit they are <\/span><b>under construction <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and not those with the loudest &#8220;readiness&#8221; claims.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a leader says, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know how this tool works yet, let\u2019s figure it out together,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they do three incredibly powerful things:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>They Kill &#8220;AI Pretender Syndrome&#8221;:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They give their team permission to stop wasting energy on the performance and start spending it on the problem.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>They Surface Hidden Risk:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Employees stop hiding &#8220;Shadow AI&#8221; or failed pilots and start sharing data that actually matters.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>They Build Intellectual Humility:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Research shows that leaders who acknowledge what they don&#8217;t know foster higher levels of trust and faster rates of learning.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4dd1016 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4dd1016\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">From Performance to Practice<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c54dc1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c54dc1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t feel guilty if you feel like you\u2019re \u201cfaking it\u201d with AI. Lean on your <\/span><b>curiosity.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The tension you feel is how you will close the gap between who you are and who you need to become.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal isn&#8217;t to be &#8220;AI Ready&#8221; from the start.
