I also have my own company dedicated to helping organizations adopt AI by putting their people at the center of it all. I worked for startups packed with extremely successful and talented people from Silicon Valley. And also worked for the United States Government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And yet, this Tuesday, I stared at a blinking cursor on ChatGPT and felt\u2026 completely incompetent.<\/p>\n<p>I was trying to build a specific GPT to automate some of my work &#8211; something I have done so many times. The model kept hallucinating and, for some reason, I couldn&#8217;t find the right prompt. It felt like everything about the tool was different all of a sudden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For a split second, the thought crept in: \u201cIf I, the (so-called) &#8216;expert,&#8217; can\u2019t keep up with this, am I just a fraud or pretending?\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ef65ab elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9ef65ab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">AI Imposter Syndrome<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-395f54d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"395f54d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"644\" data-end=\"839\">If you\u2019ve felt this recently, you are definitely not alone. A recent survey I have read found that <strong>71% of CEOs (or leaders in general)<\/strong> admit to feeling imposter syndrome. Many feel pressured to have all the answers on GenAI right now.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"841\" data-end=\"946\">In my work as a Cyberpsychologist, I see why this is happening. We are shifting how we define competence:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"948\" data-end=\"995\"><strong data-start=\"948\" data-end=\"995\">Old World: Competence = Knowing the answer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1043\"><strong data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1043\">AI World: Competence = Curating the answer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1045\" data-end=\"1252\">When the machine &#8220;knows&#8221; more facts than us, it\u2019s easy to feel like we are losing our value. That feeling of &#8220;stupidity&#8221;- the gap between what you know and what you need to know &#8211; isn&#8217;t a bad thing. It\u2019s a signal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6fd23e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6fd23e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Science of \"Not Knowing\"<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5aca338 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5aca338\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Here is the important data-backed insight: that feeling is a competitive advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Research highlights the trait of <strong>Intellectual Humility: <\/strong>the willingness to recognize that one\u2019s knowledge is limited. People with high intellectual humility are better at adopting new information and are less defensive when challenged.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to that, these feelings often appear in high performers because they prioritize accuracy and social connection over ego.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a79cedb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a79cedb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why \"Feeling Like an Imposter\" Is a Superpower<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-29b8969 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"29b8969\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-70440b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"70440b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"2060\">When you stop trying to be the smartest person in the room (or &#8220;smarter&#8221; than the AI), you tap into three specific behaviors that &#8220;know-it-alls&#8221; miss:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-start=\"2062\" data-end=\"2206\"><strong data-start=\"2062\" data-end=\"2088\">You Experiment Faster.<\/strong> If you aren&#8217;t afraid of failing and looking like you &#8220;don&#8217;t know,&#8221; you are more likely to try new tools, break them, and learn from the failure.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2208\" data-end=\"2454\"><strong data-start=\"2208\" data-end=\"2229\">You Build Safety.<\/strong> When a leader says, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know how to use this yet,&#8221; it signals to the rest of the team that it is safe for them to learn, too. This reduces the &#8220;Performative Productivity&#8221; where staff pretend to use AI just to look busy.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2456\" data-end=\"2664\"><strong data-start=\"2456\" data-end=\"2488\">You Spot the Hallucinations.<\/strong> If you are humble enough to doubt, you are diligent enough to verify. The &#8220;confident&#8221; users are the ones who blindly trust the AI&#8217;s output. The &#8220;humble&#8221; users double-check it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51a9bf7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"51a9bf7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Takeaway<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95f0a9e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"95f0a9e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We need to stop hiding our AI anxiety behind a mask of certainty. Your team doesn&#8217;t need you to be a &#8220;prompt engineering master&#8221; or something like that, who never makes a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>They need you to be the &#8220;Human-in-the-Loop.&#8221; They need you to have the courage to say: &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure how to handle this yet. Let&#8217;s figure it out together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, yes, in all honesty, AI sometimes makes me feel like I&#8217;m not as smart as I thought I was. I\u2019ve decided to treat that feeling not as a failure, but as a sign that I\u2019m pushing my boundaries.
